An original baseball franchise

The Oakland Athletics are one of the original eight teams of the American League, having been founded in Philadelphia in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. Other charter franchises included the Boston Red Stockings (now known as the Atlanta Braves), the Louisville Grays and the Chicago White Stockings (now the Chicago Cubs). The Philadelphia Athletics won three World Series titles between 1910 and 1913 and another two back-to-back in 1929 and 1930. In 1955, the club left Philadelphia for Kansas City, becoming the Kansas City Athletics until 1968, when they made the move to Oakland. Three consecutive World Series wins came from 1972 to 1974 with the assistance of legendary players like left-handed pitcher Vida Blue, Reggie Jackson and Rollie Fingers. A later one was won in 1989, with the swings of the "bash brothers", prolific home run belters Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, making a total of nine championships, the third-most of all teams competing in MLB as of 2018. Rivalries: friendly and heated

One of the earliest baseball rivalries was between the Athletics and the Philadelphia Phillies. A heated contest, games between the two clubs were known as the City Series. When the Athletics moved to Kansas in 1955, however, the rivalry died. Even in the modern game, it is barely recognised by either club, who have since developed competitive tensions with other teams. When the Athletics moved to Oakland and became the Oakland Athletics, a somewhat friendlier rivalry was sparked with the San Francisco Giants, whose home was just across the Bay Bridge that connects the two cities.
