The basketball franchise formerly known as ...
Previously known as the Buffalo Bisons, Milwaukee Hawks, Tri-Cities Blackhawks and St. Louis Hawks, the Atlanta Hawks settled on their now familiar name when ex-Georgia governor Carl Sanders and Thomas Cousins bought the franchise together from original owner Ben Kerner in 1968. The Atlanta Hawks have enjoyed a new lease of life since the turn of the century, making it past the second round of the NBA playoffs in 2015 for the first time in nearly 50 years. And two years later, they joined the Denver Nuggets, the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks as one of just four teams during the modern era to reach the playoffs for ten seasons in a row. Famous players to have pulled on the Atlanta Hawks shirt include Hall of Famers Dominique Wilkins, Dikembe Mutombo and Moses Malone, while head coaches have included Hubie Brown and Lenny Wilkens. The multi-purpose State Farm Arena
Opened in 1999, the multi-purpose State Farm Arena serves as the home for both the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association. Formerly known as the Philips Arena, the venue also once hosted home games for the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League, with the 2004 US Figure Skating Championships, the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and various UFC contests just a few of the other major sporting events to have been staged there. It's a popular music venue, too, with Sir Elton John, Bruno Mars and Aerosmith having all performed there over the years. But it's the game of basketball that the arena has become most synonymous with. Alongside the Atlanta Hawks' home ties, it has also hosted the 2003 NBA All-Star Game, 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference's Men's Basketball Tournament and the finals of the 2013 men's NCAA Division II and III college championships. In 2008, it achieved a record attendance of 20,425 when the Atlanta Hawks welcomed the Boston Celtics in the sixth game of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
