Drawing inspiration from iconic mentors
Avishai Cohen was born in northern Israel to a musical family that initially introduced him to the piano. Later, Cohen would be inspired by Jaco Pastorius, prodigal bass player of the 70s jazz-fusion group Weather Report, to pick up a bass guitar. From there, he studied the upright bass and moved to New York City where he studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Eventually, he was discovered by Panamanian piano player Danilo Pérez and invited to join his trio. Cohen also played in a number of bands through Chick Corea before starting his own label, Razdaz Records, and founding his own trio with fellow Israeli musicians Daniel Dor and Nitai Hershkovits. Inspired by a whole bunch of different genres including funk, Latin and rock, their jazz is packed with Middle-Eastern grooves and creativity that makes for a simply majestic live show. You’ll marvel as Cohen’s prominent double bass takes centre stage and watch in awe as he guides his band through complex compositions and performs masterful solos.
