More than 100,000 visitors from across Europe, bringing over 17 million euros, descend on the tiny town of Bilbao, Spain, every mid-summer. The majority of concert goers come from France and the UK. This massive outdoor event usually takes place in July, but has been scheduled as early as June depending on other events in the region.

Trivia

The Basque language is not related to any other Indo-European language group. The people are similarly fascinating and completely unique in the world. The small local BBK bank took over sponsorship for this massive concert series a few years ago, partially to help introduce Basque culture to the world. The entire event is frequently referred to simply as "The BBK" or "BBK Live."

Bands/Singers

Some of the top artists from today and yesteryear meet on stage over three days, including Muse, Mumford and Sons, The Cure, Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Surrey's Disclosure. Some years have had themes like "Heavy Metal," which featured bands like Metallica, Incubus, and Iron Maiden. In coordination to the main stages on the mountainside, the festival also includes smaller concerts in Bilbao proper. More intimate venues highlight performances by niche band favourites like Tortoise, M. Ward and Lambchop.

Breakthrough

Although the festival began as a simple street fair in 2005, it's popularity skyrocketed the very next year with mega-stars like Guns 'N Roses and the Pretenders. The 2011 festival brought this festival media coverage around the world by featuring Coldplay, Blondie and Jared Leto's Thirty Seconds to Mars.

BBK Live not only offers stunning views of Northern Spain, it is the best venue to take in a live version of the Jesus and Mary Chain's amazing debut album, "Psychocandy." Manchester's The Ting Tings, featuring Kate White, also benefit from a looser rendition of the hit "Shut Up and Let Me Go", made popular by Apple computer commercials, off their killer album "We Started Nothing."

High on Mount Cobetas, south of Bilbao, BBK tickets will you into 18.5 hectares of events, with 110,000 square meters for the three main stages. Two camping areas nearby have 30,000 square meters for fans to set up tents and make a holiday of it.
