This solo artist found his first claim to fame as part of Simon Cowell-assembled boyband Westlife. Brought together in 1998, the group proved to be a nationwide phenomenon, with all of their five albums going platinum and stealing the Number One spot on the Irish and UK charts. After deciding to leave the group in 2004 in order to focus on his family, the singer embarked on his own solo career later that same year. September saw the release of his debut solo single 'Real to Me', which hit Number One in four countries. He followed up this success with Top 10 album Irish Son, on which he had co-written most of the songs. His international breakthrough came in the form of a duet with Australian soloist Delta Goodrem - landing the two with a Number One single in both of their native countries. The pair embarked on a personal as well as professional relationship at the time, but split in 2011.
