Team Canada looks to reclaim IHF crown
When it comes to the realm of ice hockey, the Canadian Mens Hockey team boasted a record of success that was truly the envy of the world, which should come as little surprise, since ice hockey is the national winter sport of Canada. Starting with gold at the inaugural meet in 1920, the team would not only continue to rein as champions in 1924, it also reeled off a streak of six consecutive championships - a feat that stood until the former Soviet Union recorded a phenomenal nine straight gold medals from 1963-1971. From 1920 until 1954, Team Canada's main competition came from its southern neighbour, the United States, with whom it contested nine finals, winning all but one. The Canada Men's Hockey Team ranks alongside USA Hockey Men's National Team, Czech Republic National Ice Hockey Team and Great Britain National Ice Hockey Team as former World Hockey champions. Team Canada dominated the World Hockey Championships from inception through to 1961, winning 19 of the 28 competitions held. Canada Men's Hockey Team: redemption and beyond
As of 2019, Brad Schlegel held the record as top scorer and for most games played (304) in the national uniform, while Cliff Ronning held the record for most points at 156. The team played its first international game in 1910 against Switzerland, prevailing by a score of 8-1 and recorded its largest margin of victory against Denmark in 1949 with a score of 47-0. For a team and a nation accustomed to dominating the sport the years, 1961 - 1994 must have been unusually harsh, as the country's best players were unable to participate due to professional commitments in the National Hockey League. This issue caused Canada to withdraw from the IIHF, however a settlement was later reached that allowed professional players to participate in the sport for the first time in 1977. Team Canada returned to winning form at the 1994 meeting in Italy and again at the 1997 Finland tournament to close out the century. They then recorded another five gold medals during the new millennium, including back to back titles in 2015-2016. Canada Mens Hockey Team tickets are ready now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
