Carcass history

Carcass first burst onto the scene in 1988 with Reek of Putrefaction, which was immediately picked up legendary BBC 1 DJ John Peel. Despite the album's gory cover and morbid lyrics, it peaked at No. 6 on BBC's Indie LP Chart. They followed it up with Symphonies of Sickness (1989), which got even better reception from fans and critics alike. Both the albums are considered seminal works in death metal and grindcore genres.

Carcass biggest hits

While Carcass always had a substantial fan-following ever since they started playing in the late '80s, their mainstream success came in 1994 with Heartwork. The fourth studio album was released on Sony and is considered one of the most influential works in melodic death metal. Carcass took a more toned down approach for Heartwork, which was closer to Iron Maiden and mainstream metal structures than their earlier works. Interestingly, Heartwork is a sleeper hit -- if it can be called that -- since the accolades and the critical acclaim for the album came in much after it was released.

Carcass reunion

After recording their fifth studio album Swansong, Carcass disbanded in 1996, only to announce their reunion in 2007. Consequentially, the band recorded and released another studio album in 2013, entitled Surgical Steel. The album won "Album of The Year" title by Decibel Magazine -- a magazine dedicated to all music metal, and charted at No. 41 on Billboard.

The band performed their first reunion show at Sweden Rock Festival in 2008. Midway through the show, Ken Owen, Carcass' drummer, was invited on stage by performing band members. Owen suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1999 and was advised against active touring.

Subsequently, Carcass tour dates have included performances at iconic venues, such as The Hard Rock Hotel. Carcass also headlined Decibel's Beer and Metal Fest in 2014.

Carcass live performance

Carcass' live performances have seen a shift from their more serious, heavy-handed demeanor in their early days. Jeff Walker, the band's bassist and vocalist, talks often to the crowd during a set, throwing in a lot of humor that borders on self-deprecating. A lot of good humored antics are a part of the band's performance, such as stopping midway through a song, which keeps the audience engaged.
