Coldplay Biography

Meeting at University, Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion started their career as Pectoralz before settling on their current name in 1997. The group were quickly signed by Parlophone after graduation and immediately began working on debut album Parachutes. Lead single 'Yellow' garnered the group critical and public acclaim and was their first top-five hit in the UK in 2000. Parachutes was nominated for the Mercury Prize and went platinum in both the UK and US, winning the group Brit Awards for Best British Group and Best British Album.

After the success of second album A Rush of Blood to the Head and stand out singles "In My Place", "Clocks" and "The Scientist", the band went on to be named Rolling Stone's best new artist and best band of 2003. After a short period out of the limelight, the band's next album X&Y became the third fastest-selling album in UK chart history, peaking at number one in 20 countries and selling more than 8 million copies worldwide. Three years later the group went in a different direction, releasing an album inspired by their time performing across South America. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends became their fourth consecutive number one and won the band three Grammy Awards.

Two more number ones followed with Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories in 2011 and 2014, with track "Paradise" giving the group their second chart-topping single along with 2008's 'Viva la Vida', and by December 2014 they were the most played band on streaming platforms.
