England cricket: Pakistan and India await England next summer after Ashes

After the trials and tribulations of 2017's Ashes contest in Australia, England's cricketers can at least look forward to a packed calendar in front of their own fans in the summer of 2018. 

Joe Root's men will start the summer with two tests against Pakistan at Lord's and Headingley (a mini replay of last year's series; which finished 2-2), before white-ball cricket takes over: kicking off with a trip to Edinburgh to face Scotland on 10 June. 

Eoin Morgan's side then play five ODIs and a Twenty20 against Australia before continuing the limited overs format against India. The teams will play a three-match T20 series followed by a three-match ODI series.

The international summer then concludes with a five-match Test series against India, starting at Edgbaston on 1 August. With three formats of the game to choose from, and matches taking place up and the down the country, there's something for all cricket fans to take in next summer. England cricket: domestic finals and 2019 World Cup on the horizon

"A five-Test series against India is at the heart of next summer’s international programme," said ECB Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison. "This is always a much-anticipated contest which attracts a huge following across the globe for the five-day game.

"Test match cricket has a strong, consistent and passionate following across England and Wales and the seven summer Tests, starting with the Pakistan matches, are sure to attract good crowds.

"Alongside these, England’s white-ball contests against India, Australia and Scotland will give a fascinating guide to form ahead of the Cricket World Cup, to be staged here in 2019.

"We are pleased to have a very loyal following for all three formats of the game and we expect to attract great crowds across the summer."

As well as the 2019 Cricket World Cup to look forward to, there will also be some huge domestic cricket finals in 2018. The One-Day Cup Final takes place at Lord’s on 30 June, while T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston will be on 15 September.

The history of cricket

Believed to date back to Tudor times in England, the sport began to grow in popularity in the 17th century before becoming the national sport 100 years later. The first ever Test match, between England and Australia, took place in 1877, while the sport was dominated by Aussie legend Don Bradman during the inter-war years.
