Trivia
This band uses their music to tackle sociopolitical concerns in the vein of Frank Zappa and other artists of the 60s and 70s like Abbie Hoffman and Lenny Bruce. They use morbid humor and satire to tackle topics like religion and politics and aren't afraid to cause a scene. The lead singer has gone on to collaborate with other artists like Ministry and The Melvins and has also become a spoken word performer as a different way of tackling political topics.
Band
The band consists of Jello Biafra on vocals, East Bay Ray on guitar, Klaus Flouride on bass, and Ted on drums and percussion. Just after forming they also brought in another guitarist who is referred to as 6025. They sometimes play under pseudonyms because their band name is considered scandalous so you might also hear them referred to as The DK's, The Sharks, or The Creamsicles, among other names.
Breakthrough
The band formed in 1979 and in 1980 they were invited to play at the Bay Area Music Awards in San Francisco. They weren't that popular yet, but the event organizers wanted some indie punk bands to play along with the major label artists to give the show more credibility with a new wave audience. They ended up performing a controversial song about the poor ethics of the music industry, and that performance was what solidified their presence in the music scene.
Show Experience
Seeing this band live is always full of surprises. No strangers to controversy, they are always happy to stir up an evening with their lyrics and stage antics. Expect a lot of screaming and cursing as they tear up the stage and don't be surprised if the audience is screaming and shouting right along with the band members! It's also not uncommon for Biafra to take some time sharing his political thoughts on current events and whatever is going on in the world at the time. It's sure to be an incendiary performance that is lively and entertaining, so make your energy levels are high when you head to the venue with Dead Kennedys tickets in hand!
