Settling in to La Liga
Elche is the third most populated city in the autonomous community of Valencia, with just over 228,000 Ilicitanos as of 2014. In the Province of Alicante, Elche rests on Spain's east coast right next to the city of Alicante. In fact, it's so close that the cities form a de facto conurbation of almost one million inhabitants, which almost doubles during the summer season, when tourists and Spaniards alike settle in for the long months of summer away from the doom and gloom of the north. As a result of a merger between all of the town's clubs, Elche FC was founded in 1923 and entered the Spanish league system in 1929, competing in the Tercera Divisíon. By 1934, it had reached the Segunda Divisíon and by 1959 found its way into the top-flight levels of La Liga after securing a 3-0 win against CD Tenerife. Elche FC's first season in La Liga came with ups and downs. A comeback win over Barcelona FC was met with a 2-11 loss against Real Madrid. Nevertheless, like all great teams, they fought on, and in 1969, the club reached its first ever Copa del Rey final, where they fell to Athletic Bilbao at the last hurdle. They managed 17 seasons in La Liga throughout the 1960s and 70s, becoming a respected force in Spanish football and earning loyal fans from the region. Financial Struggles and the Torment of Football
The 1980s and 90s was a low time in the history of Elche FC. After being relegated to the Segunda Divisíon for the first time in 12 years, a series of unfortunate events and financial struggle brought a tough period for staff, players and fans of the club. On paper, the team was strong. In their first five years back, they finished fourth on three occasions and fifth on two, just missing out on the promotion stages. It seemed they could do nothing to get back to the place they wanted to be most of all. A promotion eventually happened in 1984, although this came about as the first two positions were occupied by reserve clubs that could not be promoted. Elche FC actually finished fifth that season. By the end of the 1990-91 season, the club was relegated to the Segunda Divisíon B, Spain's third-tier football league. A low blow for sure. It took until 2013, 24 years later, to get back to La Liga under Valencian-born Fran Escribá, who took them on yet another rollercoaster ride through the divisions in the club's modern day. Who knows what could happen next! The only way to know for sure is to get your Elche FC tickets, available to buy and sell via StubHub now!
