Electric Six: as captivating as ever

Originally founded by madcap frontman Dick Valentine in 1996, zany Motor City outfit Electric Six originally went under the moniker The Wildbunch (eventually dropping that name due to pressure from the Bristol trip hop collective of the same name). Inspired by a horde of mismatched bands from Smashing Pumpkins to Talking Heads and Kiss, the group set about twisting and exaggerating rock and roll clichés; producing a catalogue of danceable anthems along the way. Bursting onto the music scene in 2003 with their debut album Fire, Electric Six made an instant impact, with Rolling Stone magazine hailing them for bringing out 'the summer's most brilliantly demented party record'. Inflecting their signature rock sound with elements of garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal, the band released three cult hit singles: "Danger! High Voltage" (rumoured to contain backing vocals by Jack White), "Gay Bar" and "Dance Commander".

All three infectious tracks were accompanied by similarly ludicrous music videos, which pushed the album into the UK Top 10 as well as the upper echelons on the US Billboard Top 100. With 17 albums under their belt, including 2015's Bitch, Don't Let Me Die and Mimicry and Memories, the group are as prolific as ever, and remain a captivating live act.
