FC Groningen spent much of the 20th century being called GVAV. Founded as Unitas in 1915, it became known as GVAV after just two years and rapidly shot to fame as the northern Netherlands' best football team, overcoming Groningen's other home teams, Velocitas and Be Quick. A name-change in 1971 was necessitated by financial problems, but the club's auspicious new start was marred by a fatal accident involving star goalkeeper Tonny van Leeuwen.
