A race that keeps coming back for more
The first Mexican Grand Prix was held at the Magdalena Mixhuca circuit in 1962. Team Lotus driver Jim Clark took the win at the first ever international race track in Mexico. The following year, the race became a part of the Formula One World Championship, with Clark victorious yet again. The Grand Prix continued at the notoriously bumpy circuit until 1970, from where it would not be held again until 1986. This year saw the race return, although the track was renamed the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after Mexican racing heroes and brothers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez, who were both sadly killed behind the wheel. After only seven races, the Grand Prix was postponed again for a further 22 years, until its second return in 2015, which saw German Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg cross the line in first place. Six-time United States Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton took the top spot the following year, and Max Verstappen the year after that in this long-awaited racing revival. A new and improved circuit
Before its return as host of the Mexican Grand Prix in 2015, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez underwent notable renovation under German circuit architect, engineer and ex-racing driver Hermann Tilke, who created a shorter lap and modified many of its prolific corners. Tilke is also responsible for the design of other iconic racetracks, including the Sochi Autodrom from the first Russian Grand Prix in 2014, as well as the Marina Bay Street Circuit from the Singapore Grand Prix, which became the host of the first Formula 1 race to be held at night under floodlight. Other changes to the new and improved Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez include turn 17's honoring of two-time Mexican Grand Prix winner, four-time British Grand Prix title holder and all-round Formula One legend Nigel Mansell. Amongst everything else Mexico has to offer, experiencing a live race at this iconic circuit is unforgettable for any fan of motor sports.
