Racing through the ages
The first Spanish Grand Prix was held in 1913. Although not specifically run to a Grand Prix formula, but to touring car rules, the race took place in Guadarrama, close to Madrid, at a 300-kilometre long circuit, helping to establish a strong racing tradition in Spain that exists to this day. By 1935, Spain had fallen into civil war and racing stopped for over ten years, before being reignited in Barcelona with the Penya Rhin Grand Prix in 1946 at the Pedrables street circuit. Pedrables hosted the Penya Rhin Grand Prix a total of four times, eventually becoming the official Spanish Grand Prix race track in 1951 and 1954. With wide neighborhood streets and sweeping corners, drivers and fans alike loved the course, although due to tighter safety rules following the Le Mans Disaster of 1955, it was unfortunately retired as a race track. By the 1960s, the Spanish Grand Prix was most commonly held at Jarama, just north of Madrid, then had a spell in Jerez (also home to the European Grand Prix for a short period) in the 1980s. Due to its remote location, however, the event failed to attract a large number of fans, thus, its eventual settlement in Barcelona. With support from the Spanish government, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built and became the host to the Spanish Grand Prix in 1991, attracting a wealth of fans from across Europe. The best drivers making their mark
With F1 legend Michael Schumacher leading the way with six titles at the Spanish Grand Prix, there's a while to go for the formidable racers of today to catch up to him. Five time British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton is up there with three and home-grown superstar Fernando Alonso is close by with two. The 2018 Monaco Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo, however, did set a track record at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Who knows how long that record will last! Although one thing is for sure, with its long straights and a variety of corners, the Spanish Grand Prix makes for an exhilarating race. You can witness it all, with over 140,000 others at this magnificent race track. Get your F1 Spain tickets, available to buy and sell via StubHub now!
