Fortuna Düsseldorf has spent 25 seasons in the first division of the Bundesliga since its inception in 1895. Nicknamed the "Rheinländer", the club plays out of Merkur Spiel-Arena – a far cry from their roots in the tiny hamlet of Flingern. It was here that the usual German gymnastics club expanded to include other sports, and the club's football team was born.
