Fortuna Dusseldorf Tickets
Fortuna Düsseldorf, the Rheinländer of the Bundesliga
Fortuna Düsseldorf has a fine footballing history. The team hails from the Westphalia region, with its main area rivals being Arminia Bielefeld. They hold the distinction of having won every cup competition they have qualified for, with the exception of the European Cup Winner's Cup. So when you buy or sell Fortuna Düsseldorf tickets on StubHub, one thing's for sure – you'll be taking part in over a century of regional German football culture.
A late entry into the Bundesliga
Fortuna Düsseldorf has spent 25 seasons in the first division of the Bundesliga since its inception in 1895. Nicknamed the "Rheinländer", the club plays out of Merkur Spiel-Arena – a far cry from their roots in the tiny hamlet of Flingern. It was here that the usual German gymnastics club expanded to include other sports, and the club's football team was born. Over the years, Flingern was incorporated into the greater Düsseldorf metropolitan area and roughly 15 years later, the team earned first class honours, winning the local district competition. This was the start of a steady climb upwards, culminating in the West German football championship trophy in 1931 and the German national football championship two years later. They weren't included in the Bundesliga when it was first formed but played their way in for the 1966 season. It was only to last for that one season, however: while Fortuna Düsseldorf came flying off the starting blocks with a shock win over Borussia Dortmund, who were the European Cup Winner's Cup champions at the time, they were relegated at the end of the season. Nonetheless, Fortuna Düsseldorf tickets had taken on a new cachet with the club's entrance into top-flight German soccer.
European glory narrowly eludes Fortuna Düsseldorf
Fortuna Düsseldorf returned to the Bundesliga in 1971 and remained there for the next 16 years. This was arguably the most successful era in the club's existence on more than one front. Having failed at the final hurdle in every appearance in a DFB Pokal cup final, the team finally managed to win it by beating Hertha BSC. They proved that this was no flash in the pan by retaining the trophy the following year. Even bigger glory followed, with the German cup victory having earned them a place in the European Cup Winner's Cup. They made it all the way to the final, where they held FC Barcelona to a draw in regulation time, only to succumb to a single goal deficit in extra time. The next three decades were to prove financially challenging and at one point, German punk band Die Toten Hosen, who were loyal fans of the club, provided sponsorship. The club recovered from then on, and despite having to make its way back from the third division, it has returned to its rightful spot in the Bundesliga, which is where you can watch them compete with Fortuna Düsseldorf tickets on StubHub.
