Formed in 1999, this band was the brainchild of Ukrainian singer Eugene Hutz, who fell in love with gypsy music at a young age, becoming enamoured with its mystical, offbeat qualities. After the Chernobyl meltdown, the singer and his family travelled to the United States, where he teamed up with guitarist Vlad Solofar and squeezebox player Sasha Kazatchkoff to start the band.
Named after Russian-Ukrainian writer Nikolay Gogol, the group perform songs that reference their nomadic lifestyle, often accompanied by the accordion, violin and occasionally the saxophone. Relentless live shows established the band's popularity among New York hipsters, leading to a number of tours across Europe and the United States. Anthems such as 'Wonderlust King' and 'Start Wearing Purple' sealed their celebrity status, with the likes of Madonna an open fan of their crazy, indie rock sound.
