An instinct for singing jazz and blues

Gregory Porter mixes plenty of gospel and soul into his music as well; as with many jazz and blues singers, this is a reflection of his upbringing in California, the son of a mother who was a pastor. When she beseeched him virtually on her deathbed to realise his vocal talents, and after an injury put paid to any chance of a professional sporting career, he moved to Brooklyn in New York and started singing in small night clubs while working as a waiter in some of them at the same time.
