HSV traces its origins all the way back to 1887 when SC Germania was founded in Hamburg. Later, in 1919, it would merge with two other clubs to create Hamburger SV. One of the "Founding 16" of the Bundesliga, it holds the distinction of being the only side ever to play in every season of top tier German football until 2018. The mid70s-mid 80s represented the Golden Age of Die Dinosaurier, when the club won several domestic titles, including the inaugural of the DFB-Pokal following a 4-0 drubbing of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Later years produced less than stellar football exacerbated by a decline in the financial fortunes of the organization. The new millennium witnessed a revival of sorts, which saw the club win another DFB-Pokal title courtesy of a 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in 2003 and finish as high as fourth after the 2006-07 season.
