Jean Michel Jarre - French Composer Set to Release 15th Studio Album
Born and raised in Lyon, this composer appeared destined to go into music from an early age - he grew up watching street performers during weekend trips to the coast, and was inspired by the talent of his oboist grandfather. Soon, his passion found more complex influences, and he discovered his love for layering sounds upon discovering the work of French artist Pierre Soulages and listening to complex classical compositions. By his teenage years he had started experimenting with tape loops, radios and synthesisers and went on to develop his talent under the guidance of Pierre Schaeffer of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. In 1976, he released debut album Oxygene, which remains the best-selling French record of all time with over 12 million copies sold. The following year, after the release of sophomore effort Equinoxe, he held an open air concert on Bastille Day and drew in over a million spectators.
After Les Chants Magnetiques came out in 1981, the musician became the first western artist to play in the Republic of China and the concerts in Beijing and Shanghai were shared by more than 500 million listeners. His adeptness at mass live performances once again shone in 1986 with a show celebrating NASA's silver anniversary, attended by a further million fans, and was swiftly followed by the release of Rendez-Vous. By 1990 he had beaten his own record, drawing in a crowd of 2.5m for another concert marking Bastille Day, before obliterating it once again in 1997 with a show for over 3.5m people in Moscow. and this period also saw two more album releases, En Attendant Cousteau and Chronologie. The following decade was a little quieter for the star before he returned with Metamorphoses in 2000, his first vocal record which also included mobile phone sound effects. In 2015, after an extended break from the limelight, he dropped Electronica 1: The Time Machine, an album recorded with the help of 15 collaborators. 2016 sees the unveiling of the second part of the record, Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise, with the Frenchman coming to the UK for a series of live dates.
