The Latvia National Ice Hockey Team can trace its competitive roots back to the 1932 European Championship, which was held in Berlin, Germany, where the team first played as an independent nation before being absorbed into the then U.S.S.R. after World War II. The 1993 World Championships in Germany was the first time it competed again under its own flag, finishing the competition in 21st place despite winning its group.
