In review: Latvia National Ice Hockey Team
The Latvia National Ice Hockey Team can trace its competitive roots back to the 1932 European Championship, which was held in Berlin, Germany, where the team first played as an independent nation before being absorbed into the then U.S.S.R. after World War II. The 1993 World Championships in Germany was the first time it competed again under its own flag, finishing the competition in 21st place despite winning its group. At the 1997 edition of the games in Finland, the team managed to finish in the top ten behind the Sweden National Ice Hockey Team, Czech Republic National Ice Hockey Team and Canada Men's National Hockey Team, who emerged victorious that year. That 7th place finish was the best result the Latvia National Ice Hockey Team had managed at the World Championships and Latvia won the honour of hosting the 2006 IIHF World Championships, the 70th time the games were held, and recorded a respectable 10th place finish among the world's strongest hockey nations. Latvia stands tall among world hockey giants
Despite missing out on medal rounds at the IIHF World Championships several times, Latvians are proud of their national team, especially considering the competition it faces. Among the smallest nations in the competition, the team had made it to the quarterfinal round five times by the 2018 games, which were held in Denmark, and managed to hold its own against the hockey world powers who are much larger, wealthier nations. Much of the relative success of the national programme is due to the fact that hockey is the national sport of Latvia, although basketball has been gaining in influence over the last two decades. Latvia National Ice Hockey Team recorded a record win against Israel with the lopsided score of 32-0 at the 1993 German games, however their history has also seen them suffer crushing defeats, for example at the hands of the powerful Canadian national team with a score of 14-0 back in 1935. Former player Leonids Beresnevs has also been recorded as the head coach with the most wins in the nation's history.
