Macy Gray biography

Born Laura McIntyre in Canton, Ohio, this sultry songstress was initially a shy and lonesome child, bullied for her unique voice. Taking comfort in the songs of Aretha Franklin, Billie Holliday and Berry Davies, the troubled teenager studied piano while soaking up all the music she encountered. Trading her hometown for Los Angeles she soon found like-minded friends and became a known presence on the underground scene, writing lyrics for budding musicians and starting her own after-hours club The Wee Ours.

Discovering the range of her vocal capacities while recording a demo for a friend, the burgeoning star decided to make a rock'n'roll record before taking a break from her musical adventures. The LP was never released but circled various labels in Los Angeles until it was finally picked up by Jeff Blue at Atlantic Records. Instantly struck by the rarity of her voice, he immediately offered her a contract and in 1999 the earnest and deeply emotional On How Life Is was released, reaching number 3 on the UK charts. It didn't take long until the record was an enormous success, followed by a world-spanning tour with Macy Gray tickets selling out instantly. She later released other very successful albums including The Trouble With Being Myself in 2003, which became Gray's third album to be in the UK top 20 chart and Big in 2007, with tracks featuring Fergie and Justin Timberlake.

Besides Gray's studio, live and compilation albums, many of her songs have been included in soundtracks such as "Time of My Life" written by Eminem and featured in the soundtrack of his film 8 Mile and "Don't Forget Me" for the film Confessions of a Shopaholic. Gray herself has also done her thing in the film industry, appearing in movies Training Day alongside Denzel Washington in 2001, the 2002 version of Spider Man and Scary Movie 3.
