Trivia
Even if you've never heard the name Noah Gundersen, you may be familiar with his music. Gundersen also fronts The Courage, along with his sister Abby on violin, Travis Ehrentrom on bass and Ivan Gunderson (no relation) on drums. Formed in 2007 as a backup band to Gundersen's solo material, the band soon became so much more. Other members took on a more active role in songwriting and the sound became more electric and rock-based. They released an album, Fearful Bones, in 2010, and began touring the West coast - just as Gundersen's solo career was also taking flight.
Band/Singer
Noah Gundersen was born in 1989 in Olympia, Washington. He picked up piano and guitar at a young age, and by the age of 16, was gigging at cafes - first in local Olympia, and soon in nearby Seattle, which has one of the country's most legendary music scenes. Gundersen independently recorded and released his first album, Brand New World, in 2008, at the age of just 18.
Breakthrough
Gundersen's second album, 2009's Saints & Sinners, earned a boost thanks to the song Middle of June making an appearance on One Tree Hill. But it was his regular gigs that were really gaining attention. Fans and local alt-weeklies began spreading the word of Gundersen, raving about his powerful songwriting about love, loss and his religious upbringing. By the time of his album release show at Seattle's Q Cafe, the crowd was standing room only, with people spilling out the front door, craning their necks to have a listen. Gundersen soon made the move to Seattle, and another EP, Family, soon followed.
Hit Albums
In 2014, Gundersen independently recorded and released his first-ever full-length solo album, Ledges. At the age of just 25, venerable publications like USA Today, All Music, and Pop Matters were praising Gundersen for his mature, insightful lyrics, his fearless approach to songwriting and recording, and the way his work honoured and expanded upon the American folk music tradition. Gundersen's second album, 2015's Carry The Ghost, is his most sophisticated to date, travelling deep into an exploration of finding purpose in life and the nature of relationships. Now working with a professional production team including Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Band Of Horses), the album is Gundersen at his most polished and most honest.
Show Experience
With his introspective lyrics and whisper-soft vocals, Noah Gundersen knows how to create an intimate show in any venue. He is sometimes accompanied only by the sweet tones of his sister Abby on violin, while his full band, The Courage, return to back him up for larger shows. The bigger band provides a more expansive, upbeat sound, really highlighting the alt-country and Americana twinges of his music. But no matter the configuration, Gundersen is an engaging and affecting performer. Unhurried and unpretentious, he puts his whole heart and soul into writing these pensive lyrics, and into performing them night after night.
