Through the good times and bad
A member of the International Ice Hockey Federation since 1935, the Norwegian men's hockey team played its first international tournament at the 1937 IIHF World Mens Ice Hockey Championship, while the women's and junior teams debuted in 1988 and 1977. While it had a modest start, after the end of the Second World War, the team went from strength to strength, with the so called 'golden age' between 1949 and 1953 when the team beat Belgium in the 1949 World Championships and beat both the USA hockey mens national team and Great Britain national ice hockey team in the 1951 World Championships (ultimately finishing in fourth place). The country hosted and competed in the 1952 winter competitions and the following year, they became the first western nation to play the Soviet Union. While the team went on to experience several years of decline, a new era of Norwegian ice hockey was born during the 1980s, with the appointment of a succession of Swedish coaches. By the 1990s, the team experienced a steady growing success rate, which has seen the team climb thirteen places in the IIHF World Ranking between 2004 and 2012, heralding a new dawn for Norwegian ice hockey.
