Pearl Jam announce two huge London shows as part of 2018 world tour
Famed for their refusal to adhere to industry practices while remaining key influencers in the grunge movement of the early '90s, alt rock group Pearl Jam are one of the most influential bands in the history of the genre; selling more than 60 million records worldwide to date.
Tenth studio album Lightning Bolt was released to critical acclaim in 2013 and became their fifth number one on the US Billboard charts, while also winning a Grammy for Best Recording Package in 2015.
In 2016, the band embarked on a 22-date world tour, and hit the road again in 2018. With two special shows set at London's O2, make sure you grab Pearl Jam tickets at StubHub UK now.
Pearl Jam: still rocking, still innovating
The disbandment of grunge acts Mother Love Bone and Shadow saw guitarists Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament, singer Eddie Vedder and drummer Dave Krusen come together to form a new group under the name Mookie Blaylock.
After making an impression in the industry with their previous bands, the new formation was soon picked up by Epic Records taking on their current moniker. A setback occurred during the recording of debut album Ten, when Krusen left the group to be replaced by Dave Abbruzzese. Released in August 1991, the LP tackled difficult subjects such as depression and murder, all given an edge by their classic hard rock and anthemic sound. In late 1992, the record reached the number two spot in the Billboard 200, going on to become one of the highest selling rock albums ever due to a five-year spell in the charts.
The group quickly became known for their intense and energetic live performances, and followed up their hugely successful debut with Vs. in 1993. Spawning singles like "Daughter" and "Animal", the album broke records and was praised for its experimental edge. However, this was to prove the peak for the band, who retreated from commercial efforts and barely toured 1994 LP Vitalogy, though it still became the second fastest selling record in US history, with single "Spin the Black Circle" winning a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. No Code and Binaural followed, with the latter displaying a much darker sound than previous releases. After a year-long break, the band brought out Riot Act in 2002, debuting a more folk orientated sound and announcing plans to leave their record label.
2006 album Pearl Jam was a return to their staple sound under new label J Records, with single "World Wide Suicide" becoming their first number one in a decade, but that didn't stop them continuing to innovate. The band's ninth album Backspacer showed considerable influence from the pop and new wave movement in 2009, while 2013's Lightning Bolt proved a more punk rock effort, giving the group their fifth number one in the American album charts.
