Broad Street Bullies
Not long after the team was founded in 1967, the Flyers achieved the ultimate success by winning the Stanley Cup against the Boston Bruins in 1974. They did so in an emphatic fashion, earning the nickname Broad Street Bullies for their distinctive physical style of play. The team was intimidating and relentless in the pursuit of victory, led by their young and brave captain Bobby Clarke. Having been a part of the NHL's expansion from six to twelve teams in 1967, the Flyers' 1974 Stanley Cup victory was the first by an expansion team and signalled a new era of competition for the original clubs. Facing off against the Buffalo Sabres in the 1975 Stanley Cup finals, the Flyers completed a 4-2 series win to claim their second consecutive championship. Once again undertaking an assertive and tough style of play, the Broad Street Bullies regularly turned to enforcer Dave Schultz to inflict pain on the opposition. Schultz in fact set a record during 1975 for the most penalty minutes recorded in a single season, a reflection of his tough play that would often overstep the rules. Grab Philadelphia Flyers tickets to witness the historic franchise in action and see how despite adjusting to the modern game, they still play with a distinctive edge.
Not friends with Penguins
Competing in the Metropolitan Division of the NHL, the Flyers have no shortage of well-credentialed geographical opponents. No rivalry however is greater than that they share with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not only are both teams based within the state of Pennsylvania, there is a degree of honest animosity and hostility between the players and supporters of both teams. The teams faced off against each other in a showcase outdoor match known as the NHL Stadium Series in 2017. There is normally only one Stadium Series game per season and it is a reflection of the great rivalry between the Flyers and Penguins that they were given this fixture. The 2017 match was held at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and recorded an astonishing attendance of 67,318. Look for Philadelphia Flyers tickets on StubHub for matches against the Penguins and other competitive teams.
