In its early years, the Pittsburgh franchise was a formidable force. Founded in 1881 as Allegheny, the club joined the National League in 1887. The National League was established in 1876, making it the oldest professional sports league in the world. Twenty years of title drought

During the 1990s, the Pirates had a good run of success, winning three consecutive division titles, although struggled excessively over the next 20 years. Between 1993 and 2012, they suffered 20-straight losing seasons, which, in 2018, remained the longest streak of its kind in American sports history. To end the drought, however, the following year, the Pirates qualified for the National League Wildcard and reached the quarter-final round of the playoffs where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates play at the magnificent PNC Park, situated in Pittsburgh's North Shore neighbourhood.
