Responsible for some of baseball's most memorable moments
In its early years, the Pittsburgh franchise was a formidable force. Founded in 1881 as Allegheny, the club joined the National League in 1887. The National League was established in 1876, making it the oldest professional sports league in the world. The Pirates won titles in 1901, 1902 and 1903 and played in the first ever World Series against the Boston Americans, who would later become the Boston Red Sox. Boston came out on top, winning the last four games of the series in a thrilling finale to take an overall 5-3 victory. The Pirates didn't have to wait too long before securing their first World Series title. It came in 1909 in a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. The series is best remembered for the phenomenal play by Pittsburgh shortstop Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb, outfielder for the Tigers. Other notable successes include the World Series of 1960 against the New York Yankees, where Bill Mazeroski hit the only walk-off home run to finish a winner-takes-all game of any World Series ever. The Pirates also won the 1971 and 1979 World Series, featuring legends of the game such as Roberto Clemente and "Pops" Willie Stargell. Twenty years of title drought
During the 1990s, the Pirates had a good run of success, winning three consecutive division titles, although struggled excessively over the next 20 years. Between 1993 and 2012, they suffered 20-straight losing seasons, which, in 2018, remained the longest streak of its kind in American sports history. To end the drought, however, the following year, the Pirates qualified for the National League Wildcard and reached the quarter-final round of the playoffs where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates play at the magnificent PNC Park, situated in Pittsburgh's North Shore neighbourhood. It is their fifth home stadium, having previously played in ball parks such as Three Rivers and Forbes Park. Could it be the site of the Pirates' next World Series win?
