Original Author
Placido Domingo was born in Madrid, Spain in 1941. His parents ran a zarzuela company, performing Spanish lyric-dramas. In 1949 Domingo moved to Mexico with his family and later studied piano, voice, and conducting at Mexico's National Conservatory of Music. In his early career he sang baritone roles, making his professional opera debut at the age of 18 with the Mexico National Opera. At this time, he also performed with his parent's zarzuela. Domingo began singing tenor roles in the late 1950s. While finding his feet as a fledgling opera singer, he also worked as a piano accompanist, backing vocalist, and actor. Between the 1960s and 1980s, he built a high-profile opera career singing with the Israel National Opera, the New York City Opera, the Metro Politan Opera, the English National Opera, and many more. In the 1990s he found even more fans when he took part in The Three Tenors concert at the 1990 World Cup Final. This collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras was such a hit that a Three Tenors world tour followed, along with best-selling recordings. Highlights since 2000 include composing the song Himno del Centenario del Real Madrid to commemorate the club's 100th anniversary. Domingo sang for Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, and in 2009 he was celebrated by the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years with the company. Domingo has been honoured by governments around the world, receiving awards like the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States, Commandant of the Legion of Honor in France, and Honorary Knight of the British Empire. He has also been granted honorary doctorates by Oxford University and NYU.
