Primal Scream Biography - Chaosmosis
The original members of the group first met at school, where they bonded over a love for punk rock. After multiple line-up changes and difficulties defining a sound they were all happy with, Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Innes, Robert 'Throb' Young, Henry Olsen and Phillip 'Toby' Tomanov, discovered the acid house scene in 1988. After a meeting with DJ Andrew Weatherall, the band's track 'I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have' was remixed and became 'Loaded', their first UK chart hit. Successful singles 'Higher Than the Sun' and 'Don't Fight It, Feel It' followed, before seminal LP Screamadelica was released in 1991, reaching number eight in the UK album charts and helping them claim the Mercury Music Prize. Influenced by the likes of The Stone Roses, the band's next album Give Out But Don't Give Up had a heavier feel, and earned them a touring slot with Depeche Mode.
After a short break and a further line-up change, taking on former Stone Roses bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield and drummer Paul Mulraney, the group returned with Vanishing Point. Inspired by Richard C. Sarafian's 1971 film, the album received positive reviews across the board, winning them praise for its hypnotic quality. Cult film Trainspotting included their song of the same name in its highly acclaimed soundtrack, and it seemed the band could do no wrong. Their music became politically charged in the following years, with 2000 album XTRMNTR praised for its honesty and topping NME's 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade. 2007 record Riot City Blues captured the energy of their live performances and gave the band another top five hit in the charts, but their next step would see them look back to the past. In 2011, they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Screamadelica, playing the iconic album in its entirety to enraptured audiences, before releasing their most recent record More Light in 2013. With Chaosmosis released in March 2016, followed by a select number of live dates across the UK, the future remains bright.
