One of the UK's best-loved comedians; actor, writer and stand-up legend Ricky Gervais has conquered the world with his hilarious and dark sense of humour. He is perhaps best known for writing and co-directing TV mockumentary series The Office with Stephen Merchant, while playing cringe-worthy boss David Brent. Ricky Gervais: Britain's most famous comedian

Born and raised in Reading to a working class family, Gervais formed his unique sense of humour at home, influenced by his mother's light-hearted wit. After his studies at university, he joined the new wave rock outfit Serona Dancing, who had a minor hit in the Philippines and went on to manage the unsigned Suede before they made it big. The comedian started working for XFM in the late '90s, hiring Stephen Merchant – who would later be his comedy partner – to be his assistant. Numerous TV appearances and a host of roles followed, including Golden Years, Meet Ricky Gervais and his first hit show The Office.

An increased profile allowed his stand-up career to take off in the early 2000s, with themed tours Animals and Politics some of his most highly commended work.
