Trivia

Rise Against originally formed under the name Transistor Revolt, changing its name in 2001 after releasing its first album. The band is best known for its punk music, but it also supports a variety of progressive social causes. Most notably, all band members are vegetarians who support People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and shy away from drug and alcohol use -- something that directly contradicts the stereotypes about punk musicians. The group has also been known to get involved in American political causes. In 2004, the band contributed to the Rock Against Bush compilation. It also endorses a line of VAN shoes that are made with its workers' rights in mind.

Band/Singer

Rise Against is a punk band with a mission; it has been together since 2001 and has gone through a variety of band members and musical styles. The band's original lineup was made up of alumni from other punk bands, notably 88 Finger Louie and Baxter. Today, the only original band members left are Tim McIIrath and Joe Principe. In the early 2000s, Rise Against opened for notable bands like Sick of It All and No Use For It All, before being picked up by DreamWorks Records in 2003.

Breakthrough

Although Rise Against had already put out two albums by the early 2000s, it was not until their third album that they achieved hit status. In August 2004, Siren Song of the Counterculture was the first to break into the Billboard charts in the United States, hitting number 136. The album soon made Gold status in both the United States and Australia, and made Platinum status in Canada.

Hit Albums

Since Siren Song of the Counterculture, Rise Against has had a number of hit albums. All of its subsequent albums made Gold status in several countries and hit the Top Ten in the Billboard charts in the United States. The most popular albums turned out to be Endgame and The Black Market. These albums made the top three in the United States and Britain. Endgame also made Gold status in both Australia and Germany, while The Black Market has already made Gold status in Canada just months after its initial release.
