The road to becoming the most successful romantic artist in Brazil
Roberto Carlos, or the King of Latin, as he is known, is one of the biggest names in Latin American music, alongside fellow musicians Caetano Veloso and Julio Iglesias. Having sold more than 120 million records around the world, he achieved worldwide success with his fusion of Elvis Presley-style pop and Brazilian. When Roberto Carlos rose to fame in the 1960s during the Brazilian military dictatorship, he initiated a major musical revolution. With his light pop music, which directly contradicted the more sombre and serious protest songs of the time, he eventually came to establish an international career, winning awards including the Grammy and Billboard Latin charts. The artist, who wrote songs alongside partner Erasmus Carlos, shifted his musical style over time to the romantic and Latin style that produced hits including "Sua Estupidez", "Detalhes", "Debaixo dos Caracóis dos Seus Cabelos" and "Jesus Cristo". Even before the turn of the 21st century, Roberto Carlos tickets were sold around the world and he was officially known as The King of Latin Music, or simply "The King" for short.
A career marked by successes and international recognition
Since the 1960s, the "Quero Que Vá Tudo Pro Inferno" singer has performed in venues all over the world, including South America, Central America, North America, where he has performed in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, and Europe (London, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, and Italy, where he participated in the Venice Song Festival). He has also put on live shows for fans in both Africa and Asia. In the 1970s, Roberto became the top record-selling Brazilian artist, a position he would keep for many consecutive years. To reach an even larger audience, the singer also recorded many tracks in French and English, finding success at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, where he won the Grammy as the Best Latin American Pop Singer. Finally, he would go on to sing with many other famous artists, most notably Jennifer Lopez with their single "Chegaste".
