Rock Werchter is a music festival held during the first weekend of summer and is one of the largest events of its kind in Belgium. Bringing together rock, hip-hop, alternative and electronic dance music artists among others, it has often been hailed as 'the best festival in the world'. An inside look at the Rock Werchter Festival

Flemish politician Herman Schueremans founded the festival then known as 'Torhout-Werchter' because it was actually a double festival held at twin sites in Torhout and Werchter until 1999, when the former site was dropped from the schedule. The first event, which was held in 1974, was a one-day affair but it has since morphed into a four-day festival due to its huge popularity among Belgians and the increasing influx of international visitors from the UK and South Africa, among other countries. In the early days of the festival, bands would perform at each site on a single stage until 1999, when the 'Pyramid Marquee' tent (capacity 6,000) was added to the Main Stage and a third, 'The Barn' (capacity 10,000), followed in 2012. By then, the festival was averaging close to 86,000 spectators per day and so the Pyramid Marquee was replaced with the larger 'KlubC' in 2013. Over the years, many of the world's greatest musical acts have performed on the stages at Rock Werchter, including Sting, David Bowie and Coldplay. Evolution of the festival

Live Nation purchased Rock Werchter Festival in 2003 and expanded it to a four-day schedule, but beyond these changes, the festival has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, spawning several secondary events. These secondary events include the TW Classic, created in 2002 as a tribute to the glorious origins of Torhout-Werchter, which has played host to Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen and The Police; Werchter Boutique, billed as a full family affair that premiered in 2008 with Santana, Madonna headlined in 2009 and Prince followed in 2010; and the Main Square Festival, a smaller version of the parent and held in Arras, France on the same dates. Although the headline acts are world renowned, Rock Werchter has also featured many local performers, such as Deus, Balthazar and SX. Festival attendees can purchase tickets for space at one of the campsites around the festival grounds and there are even XL camping tickets if you wish to arrive a day early - but be sure to hang around for the fireworks finale on the Sunday night.
