Seal: soul singer to tour UK in February 2018 after release of tenth album Standards
Returning to the classic pop-soul sound that first found him fame in the '90s, Olusegun Samuel's ninth album 7 was praised for its frank lyrical content and luxuriously warm vocal delivery after its release in November 2015. Penned as a cathartic record of love, heartbreak and healing, it proved a strong comeback for Seal, landing straight in the top 20 of the UK album chart.
Now, Seal returns in 2017 with his third album of covers – Standards – which includes re-works of iconic tracks such as "Luck Be A Lady", "I Put a Spell on You" and "I've Got You Under My Skin".
On recording the album Seal said: "This is the album I have always wanted to make. I grew up listening to music from the Rat Pack era, so recording these timeless tunes was a lifelong dream. It was a true honour to collaborate with the same musicians who performed with Frank Sinatra and so many of my favourite artists, in the very same studios where the magic was first made – it was one of the greatest days of my recording career."
To support the November 2017 release, Seal will tour the UK in February 2018 with concerts in Edinburgh, London, Brighton, Glasgow, Gateshead, Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham, Birmingham and Dublin.
In a career stretching back over two and a half decades Seal has sold more than 30 million records, while 1994 smash hit "Kiss from a Rose" helped to launch a career that has seen him win three BRIT Awards, four Grammys and an Ivor Novello. Seal: three BRIT awards, four Grammys, 30 million records sold
Breaking the mould of the UK acid house scene in the early '90s, Seal fused the best of soul, folk, pop and dance to create his own path in the industry. Alongside renowned producer Adamski, his breakthrough came in 1990 with number one single "Killer", which went on to form part of his debut self-titled album. His success was remarkable; the LP not only hit the number one spot in the UK but earned Seal an Ivor Novello Award for the smash hit single.
He was in high demand, and gave memorable performances in the following years at events such as the 1992 BRIT Awards and a Freddie Mercury tribute concert at Wembley alongside the surviving members of Queen. Second single "Crazy" proved a monster hit too, and it wasn't long before fans were anticipating a new album. Seal's second self-titled effort dropped in 1994 and included iconic track "Kiss From a Rose", which found popularity as part of the Batman Forever movie soundtrack and won two Grammy Awards. Two years later, the single's influence could still be seen as it sky rocketed its parent album to multi-platinum status.
Seal: recording new covers album "one of the greatest days of my career"
Despite limited success with Human Being and Togetherland, the singer returned to his best in 2003 with Seal IV, launching him back into the public eye and landing in the top five of both the UK and US charts. The following years would see him take a break from recording after his high profile marriage to supermodel Heidi Klum, only interrupting his hiatus for a 2004 greatest hits opus.
Seal continued to perform live across the world, before returning to his dance roots for fifth studio album System in 2007, which included the Grammy Award nominated track "Amazing". Following the success of his first soul covers album in 2008, he released a second in 2011, produced by long-time collaborator Trevor Horn, and received praise for creating faithful renditions of classics by artists such as Al Green and Marvin Gaye.
2015 album 7 brought yet more chart success, with Seal set to release a third covers album – Standards – in November 2017. The release will be following by an extensive UK tour in February 2018 with concerts up and down the country.
