The Slovenia National Ice Hockey Team is one of the younger teams in Europe, but the country has been part of international ice hockey for close to a hundred years. A young country, but a long history of international ice hockey

As part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has been involved in the international ice hockey world since the late 1930s. After Slovenia became an independent country in 1991 they formed their own team; the Slovenia National Ice Hockey Team played their debut game against the Austrian National Ice Hockey Team the following year, winning 1–0. Since the establishment of the national team, Slovenia has done very well, especially when you consider they have a small population. International hockey is split into several divisions with championships held each year, and Slovenia has played in the top (known as the Elite) division on several occasions. The first time they played in the Elite Division was in 2002, after they won their group in the 2001 championship and earned promotion. The best season result they achieved was finishing 13th in the championship, and by 2019 had achieved a highest overall international ranking of 12th. One of their greatest achievements was when they played at the games in winter in 2014. It was the first time that Slovenia had ever qualified and most people expected them to come last, without even earning a single point. They ended up finishing in eighth place, surprising everyone with some amazing performances including a 3–1 win over the Slovakia National Ice Hockey Team and a 4–0 win against Austria in the playoffs. Other notable games include a 29–0 victory over South Africa in the 1990s, which, more than two decades later, remains their biggest ever victory. The Slovenian team has featured many great players over the years including Anze Kopitar. He was the first-ever Slovenian to play in the NHL (for the Los Angeles Kings), and his father even became the coach of the Slovenian team in 2019.
