The Smashing Pumpkins: alt-rock's great survivors

Born after a chance meeting between soon-to-be lead singer Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha at a Chicago record store, the Smashing Pumpkins came together with the addition of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky. Together, the group began playing local clubs, hawking a sonic style vaguely influenced by iconic '80s acts such as New Order. Yet, rather than defaulting to a derivative rock sound, the foursome was intent on infusing a harder, more modern edge into their music - an approach evident in their studio debut album, 1991's Gish. Amidst moderate success came a slew of personal problems, leading the band to relocate for the recording of their follow up, 1993's Siamese Dream.
