Rangers history and the A-Rod mega-deal
The Rangers were first established as the Washington Senators in Washington D.C. in 1961. The city's first franchise, also called the Senators, moved its organisations to Minnesota the previous year under owner Clark Griffith. Here they would become the Minnesota Twins, allowing the new Senators to take its place in the capital. When they moved to Arlington to become the Texas Rangers in 1972, D.C. didn't see a glimpse of major league baseball for over 30 years, until the Montreal Expos relocated there and became the Washington Nationals. The Rangers got their first victory, a 5-1 win over the California Angels, on their second ever game and got their first winning season in 1974 after disappointing 1972 and 1973 finishes. Under manager Johnny Oates, the Rangers won their first division title in 1996, where big slugger Juan González was named as the American League's Most Valued Player. The team was bought by Tom Hicks, a billionaire investor, in 1998, three years before the most highly-paid deal in the history of baseball. Shortstop Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez was signed on a 10-year contract worth $252 million. Nowhere does it large quite like Texas! Reaching for the elusive World Series title
After winning the American League pennant in 2010 and 2011, the Rangers found themselves in the World Series two years in a row. Their first chance came after taking down the New York Yankees in the league championship, paving the way to face the San Francisco Giants in the biggest game of the franchise's history. The Rangers lost 4-1 as the Giants took home their fourth World Series title. The St. Louis Cardinals stopped the Rangers in their second attempt the following year in a 4-3 battle to the wire. A rise in contention throughout the 2000s saw the Rangers develop into a top-ranking team. Now you can see them live in action with Texas Rangers tickets up and ready to buy or sell via StubHub! Keep an eye out for Rangers Captain, the team's famous palomino mascot!
