Within the autonomous community of Valencia, in the province of Castellón, lies the city of Villareal. With only just over 50,000 inhabitants, it is a relatively small place, especially considering the domestic and international success of its football team. Villareal was founded during the Reconquista by King James I of Aragon in 1274. After the longest reigning Iberian monarch regained Muslim territory, he presented the city with royal status. In the 2004-05 season, Villareal CF finished third in La Liga, directly qualifying for the European football league for the first time. The club went undefeated on the way to the last 16 stages, fending off Manchester Utd with a draw and a win against Portugal's Benfica.
