Weval: from Amsterdam to the world

Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers met in 2010, and it wasn’t long before the music began flowing between them under the name of Weval. Their first release, "Half Age", was released on record label Atomnation in 2013, an incredible debut that immediately caught plenty of attention and launched an exciting year for the duo. At that year’s Pitch Festival they performed their live show for the first time – using synthesisers, drum machines and other electronics to bring their tracks to life – while in 2014 the track "Detian" from their debut EP was used for a TV advert with Penelope Cruz. The resulting attention saw "Detian" enter the top five of the French iTunes Electronica chart and a remix of the Gui Boratto track "Take Control" top the charts on popular electronic music downloads website Beatport. In the space of a year, Weval had well and truly established themselves in the electronic music world, and this was only the beginning. Electronic excellence, whether studio or show

Going from strength to strength, Weval were noticed and later signed by the legendary Cologne-based Kompakt label, which has been home to artists and DJs such as The Orb and Michael Mayer. The deal offered the perfect home for the young duo, allowing them to follow up their debut EP with several more hugely popular releases such as their self-titled album of 2016, celebrated for its musical maturity and emotional composition, and their 2019 album "The Weight", which again pushed the boundaries of the Intelligent Dance Music genre. Alongside these highly successful releases, Weval perfected their live show. Combining electronic devices with live instruments such as a drum kit and electric guitar, the duo’s live performances have been celebrated for capturing the essence of their precise studio recordings in a more free-flowing and improvised format. Their reputation saw them tour across Europe and North America, playing at some of the biggest and best music festivals in the world.
