Xoel Lopez is a Spanish alternative rock star who used to go by his previous stage name of Deluxe – so if you know that artist, then here's a chance to see the man behind the mask, one might say. He began his career by composing and singing in English, but in the latter part of his career, he has reverted to his native tongue. A musician dedicated to his Galician roots

Xoel Lopez is a dedicated Spanish musician. His decision to change tack and begin writing and singing in Spanish – with all the ensuing commercial implications in terms of the international market – was down to a deep belief in staying true to his roots, which, in his case, lie in the Galician province of his homeland. He began his English alternative rock career by forming a band called Los Covers, whose music is lost to history, but who one can surmise played the kind of songs that their name suggests. It was with Elephant Band, his second group, that he tasted much more success, and signed a record deal with an influential Spanish indie label, which gave him and his band a decent platform from which to reach the rest of the country. From there it was on to the major labels, who had been encouraged to sign him on the back of his indie success, and he released two albums in quick succession for Virgin Records. His second, "Los Jóvenes Mueren Antes de Tiempo", won the award for album of the year from Rolling Stone's Spanish edition. A constantly rising Spanish rock star

Xoel Lopez has remained largely a local star, so to speak, although he has gathered something of a following in neighbouring Portugal. He's always had a good relationship with one of the country's bands with whom he toured at one point, The Gift, and he later established something of a musical exchange programme going with them, where they support each other at live shows in either country. He went solo in 2007, and released two more successful albums, 2012's "Atlantico" and "Suenos y Pan" in 2017, which won him a nomination from the Independent Music Publishers Association for European Album of the Year. He has also toured and performed with many other modern Spanish rock artists and bands, including the highly successful Amaral from Zaragoza, and fellow Galician singer-songwriter Ivan Ferreiro.
