Zayn - Boyband Star Turns R&B Icon

In 2015, poor old Malik was in a pretty bad place. Fed up with fame, relentless touring and releasing coterminous manufactured pop albums with his One Direction bandmates, he shocked the world by bowing out of their On the Road Again Tour, citing stress and exhaustion. The oldest member of 1D eventually quit the band for good in March 2015, expressing his desire to be a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight".

Besides being known as the 'Bradford Bad Boy' of the award winning five-piece, Malik was also noted for being the member with the strongest, most diverse vocal range. A solo career was pretty much inevitable. After enjoying a year out of the limelight, he surprised fans by releasing R&B slow jam 'PILLOWTALK'. Flaunting his glass-shattering falsetto against some rather racy lyrics proved to be a winning formula, and his first solo single soared straight to the top of charts across the globe.

Releasing his debut album Made of Mine in March 2016, Malik has proven it's possible to rise from the ashes of boy band fame. Diverting from the pure pop sensibilities he's come to be recognized for, he's now going back to his roots, switching to a more urban sound packed with suggestive, seductive libretti. Interlacing R&B, hip hop, reggae and Bollywood melodies throughout tracks like 'Befour' and 'Lucozade', his new album hit the number one pot on the US Billboard Hot 100 - a musical victory not even One Direction have managed to achieve thus far.
